Houston County Smoke and Soot Cleanup

Fire Damage Houston County Smoke and Soot Cleanup Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Houston County Home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Dothan will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Fire Damage 10 Holiday Safety Tips For The Houston County Residents! Holiday Safety Tips

The holidays are sneaking up on us and listed below are a few holiday tips we would like to share.

1. Inspect electrical decorations for damage before use.

2.DO NOT overload electrical outlets!!!

3. Never connect more than three strands of lights. Connecting more than this will cause a fuse to blow, and could potentially cause a fire.

4. Keep your tree watered daily. Watering your tree daily will keep it alive and prevent drying out. Trees can be a serious fire hazard!

5. Use battery operated candles.

6. Do NOT leave the house with a fire going in your fire place! Always be home and awake with a fire is going inside. The wood used in a fireplace can  sometimes spark and pop.  This can land on a rug or carpeted area, causing a house fire to start.

7. Protect electrical cords.

Cords should never be pinched by furniture , forced into tight places,  or placed under rugs/ carpeted areas.  Also remember that you should never nail or staple down an electrical cord. This can cause damage to the cord and therefore end us causing a house fire to start.

8. Stay in the kitchen when something is cooking!

Never leave your oven or stove unattended.

9.Turn off any decoration while you are away from your home or asleep at night!!!

10. Keep combustibles at least 3 feet away from a heat source. This was one of the main causes of fires last year.

SERVPRO of Dothan is always here to help. Please be safe and share these few tips with friends and family this holiday season!

The worst of the winter season is yet to come, and the harshness of the season has the potential to take a toll on your building.  Water can collect in cracks and spaces between bricks and masonry and freeze, causing structural damage.  Even in warmers climates like here in Houston County, extended hours of cold temps can lead to bursting pipes and unwanted damages to your business.

Water Damage in your home

10/25/2018 (Permalink)

Water damage can be deceptive. Water penetrates into structural cavities creating trapped pockets of saturation. The detection of water in these areas can often only be discovered with sophisticated moisture detection meters. Undetected moisture will continue to cause damage. This damage, at a minimum, will cause odors. Greater damage will surface when materials delaminate, shrink, split and further deteriorate to where costly repairs are required.

More than just removing excess water, IICRC-certified restorers have the knowledge and equipment to further dry a home or facility (including substructure materials) completely back to preloss conditions. Through timely response and the careful monitoring of water damage, mold and other health issues can be prevented. If water damage has been present too long, mold will occur.

All IICRC-certified professionals have the training and experience to identify moisture sources, evaluate mold growth (visible or suspected), contain damage, remove contamination and dry materials to ensure that mold will not return.

Hurricane Michael Response

Storm Damage Hurricane Michael Response Hurricane Michael Response

Like all other First Responders, our dedicated crews are working around the clock to help all those in need. We are in full storm mode and have pulled in additional crews, equipment, and resources from surrounding SERVPRO franchises in order to help everyone that needs service.   We ask for your patience and understanding; we are attempting to get to everyone as quickly and as safely as possible.

The Wiregrass area was very fortunate that there was no loss of life but the impact of this hurricane was severe. This has been an unprecedented weather event in our area and some people and businesses will be without power for days; complete recovery will take much longer.

We appreciate your patience and we won't stop working until everyone receives service.

Wiregrass Electric Coop Outage Update

10/15/2018 (Permalink)

Wiregrass Electric released a map with new estimates for power restoration.  They have been working around the clock to restore power to their customers but the damage to the infrastructure was severe.  You can read their press release here.  This map is also color coded by impact; the red shaded area is what the cooperative is referring to as "ground zero" where the heaviest winds and damage took place.

They are asking for everyone's patience and understanding while they work around the clock to clear trees, replace power lines and poles, and make sure that when power is restored, its done safely.  According to their press release, they will have roughly 225 lineman working in our area by last night.

They will be updating the current outage numbers, by substation, every morning and evening.

Tropical Development Chances

10/4/2018 (Permalink)

Its that time of the Hurricane season where tropical storms are more likely to form and strengthen closer to our community.  This potentially means a lot less warning and a lot less time to prepare.

The Weather Channel is watching a potential tropical storm area in the Caibbean right now and reporting a low potential for development in the next 5 days.

But the potential is there and the weather experts at NOAA are watching this one and looking closely for possible others since we still have 2 months of hurricane season to get through. And please remember, Hurricane Season might end on November 30th but Mother Nature doesn't always mind the calendar so storms after this date are possible to.

So double check your emergency plan and your emergency kits!  (Don't forget to plan for your pets as well.)

Top Causes of Home Fires in the US

10/4/2018 (Permalink)

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), cooking equipment is the leading cause of home fires and heating equipment is the most common cause of home fire fatalities.

As the Fall and Winter seasons approach, when we start using heaters and fireplaces, and gathering and cooking for the holidays, please be sure to visit the National Fire Protection Association website and review how to prevent  these top causes of home fires and what action to take if they occur:

Cooking equipment

Heating

Smoking

Electrical

Candles

Curious Children

And don’t forget to check and test your smoke detectors at least twice a year. Most people do it when the time changes as a way to remember when to do it but you can test them at any time of the year.

Clothes Dryer Safety

10/4/2018 (Permalink)

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), "between 2010 - 2014, USA fire departments responded to an estimated 15,970 home fires involving clothes dryers or washing machines each year.  These fires resulted in annual losses estimated at 13 deaths, 440 injuries, and $238 million in property damage. Clothes dryers accounted for 92% of the fires; washing machines 4%, and washer/dryer combinations accounted for 5%." One-third of the dryer fires were caused by the simple failure to clean them.

“Fires involving clothes dryers usually started with the ignition of something that was being dried or was a byproduct (such as lint) of drying.”

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) offers free safety tip and fact sheets along with a Clothes Dryer safety video.

Does Your Dothan Home Have A Mold Problem?

2/16/2018 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Conditions In Dothan Might Be Right For Mold

2/16/2018 (Permalink)

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Dothan to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

If you suspect mold, call us today

Spring Freeze

3/16/2017 (Permalink)

We are experiencing unusually cold temperatures this week so please make sure that you cover your plants, bring your animals in, and take precautions to prevent frozen pipes. Here are some tips to prevent damage:

Let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.

Wrap exposed pipes if possible

Add insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in these areas.

Storms roll through the Wiregrass again.

Community Storms roll through the Wiregrass again. Current radar

Showers and thunderstorms gain better coverage Wednesday morning, though mainly stay below severe limits. At best we’ll see localized spots of heavy rain nearly 3 inches, but otherwise 1-2 inches more widespread. Though the front that is serving as the focal point for all our rain is stubborn to exit our area, it finally looks to move out near or after New Year’s Day. Eventually more seasonal winter air—at least for the Deep South—makes a return by the weekend.

TONIGHT – Isolated showers developing overnight, becoming more widespread by the morning. Low near 65°. Winds SSE at 5 mph.
TOMORROW – Scattered showers and thunderstorms, with heavier rain at times. High near 74°. Winds S at 5-10 mph.
TOMORROW NIGHT – Showers possible. Low near 58°. Winds N at 5 mph.
